We are very excited to announce the launch of our newest plantation shutter material Larchwood.
What is Larch?
Larch is a hard and strong timber with an attractive and warm reddish brown or terracotta colour with golden streaks, it is extremely durable both indoors and outdoors without the use of preservatives and it’s also ideal for use inside bathrooms.
The larchwood is made of Siberian Larch and has an average density of 675kg/m3. The hardness of wood is generally defined as its resistance to indentation which is why for example Larch has been used for Olympic cycle tracks.
Siberian Larch is also named “The tree of eternity” due to its longevity. Timber framed buildings made from Larch have survived up to 600 years. Due to its high density Larch suffers from fewer dents and abrasions and this means fewer places for water or fungi to penetrate the wood. Many of the foundations of Venice famously rest on Larch and traditionally boats were planked with Larch.
Siberian Larch species actually account for 38% of the timber in the 2.7 billion acres of forest in Russia. This is significantly larger than the Amazon Forest which is only 800 million acres in size. The annual growth of Larch is estimated to be around 800 million cubic meters per year which allows for a logging threshold of 500 million cubic meters per year.
Larchwood is available in 11 painted colours and 15 stained colours, custom colours and special shapes are also available. Larchwood is a quality and premium product competitively priced at only £280.00 per square meter, this makes the Larchwood one of our best selling hardwood’s to date.
